A 20 page, A5, full colour, illustrated booklet for children 7 -12 years who've been affected by family violence. It clearly explains what a Protection Order is, why they are needed sometimes and what they mean for a family. Protection Orders often dictate changes in the children's lives and so it was important for them to understand the 'why' behind such a court order. The booklet was 'road tested' by children in our Skylight Domestic Violence groups, and by their facilitators. It was then redrafted and put out for feedback by a wide range of NZ professionals working with children and families/whanau impacted by violence. Just launched July 2009, by NZ's Head Family Court Judge, Judge Boshier. PLEASE NOTE: FOR DISCOUNTS FOR 5 OR MORE COPIES, PHONE 0800 299 100. 5 -19 COPIES $5, 20+ COPIES $4.50.

A Picture book for children. for use by sexual assault counsellors.
Few books exist that so frankly, yet sensitively, invite conversations with children about recovering from abuse and staying safe. This hardcover picture book was developed in response to the need for creative, honest and original tools for working with children who have been sexually assaulted.
“Through Rosy and Jack children can learn strategies which they may model to deal with the impact of sexual assault. Examples are the use of 'body signals' to tell children when they are feeling unsafe, having a network of trusted adults to whom a child can go to talk, and how to express feelings like anger in a safe way. This is a resource that counsellors working with child victims of sexual assault can use effectively in their work.'

Shadows is an emotionally charged set of 48 watercolour images. These iconic images (including a boat on a stormy sea, a person asleep on a park bench) invite the viewer to reflect on their experiences and explore the meaning of the 'shadows' in their lives. Contained in the images are subtle suggestions for hope and light.

Teens Who Hurt: Clinical Interventions to Break the Cycle of Adolescent Violence by
Kenneth V Hardy and Tracey A Laszloffy (USA)

The respected authors’ approach is based on the premise that violent adolescents are not just ‘bad’ or ‘mad’, but rather are fundamentally hurt (thus the ambiguity of the term ‘hurt’ in the title). For some teenagers, this hurt turns into violence toward others or themselves. In short, this book details the kind of heartbreaking losses that too many young people experience (a prime loss being their own sense of self-worth), reveals how these losses are often unacknowledged and describes how the natural emotional rage that accompanies such losses can result in violence. Hardy and Laszloffy are clear to point out that rage is not the problem, however. The critical issue involves what they do with their rage. They offer skills and strategies for harnessing and directing the power of their rage positively so that it shapes and creates rather than attacks and destroys.
