A small group programme delivered in schools over 10 weeks by Skylight counsellors or school hauora staff members for tamariki in years 5-8, to talk, create, reflect and develop the practical skills to help them cope with life's challenges.
It takes a holistic, culturally grounded approach based on Te Whare Tapa Whā to strengthen all aspects of wellbeing.
The overall aim of Te Korowai is to:
Support tamariki to navigate change and loss
Build resilience and coping skills
Strengthen emotional wellbeing
Foster a sense of belonging and connection
Supports long-term wellbeing and engagement
Who will facilitate this programme?
Schools interested in delivering the programme can nominate one or two school team members to attend an online training. This might include the school counsellor, youth worker or social worker or another member of the wellbeing team. In some cases, and where funding allows, Skylight can provide facilitators to deliver the programme within the schools.
How the programme works
The school leadership team will identify students who would benefit from additional support and work with the facilitators to form small groups of 4-6 participants. Small groups meet weekly for approximately 90 minutes over ten weeks. Throughout the programme, participants create their own korowai while exploring wellbeing through activities such as clay, beadwork, drawing, movement, mindfulness and creative expression. Together they learn practical strategies to strengthen their four walls of wellbeing (Taha Tinana/Physical , Taha Hinengaro/Mental and Emotional, Taha Wairua/Spiritual, Taha Whānau/Social) and deepen their connection to themselves, others and the whenua (land, roots and place of belonging). Skylight provides the programme manual and key resources. Schools supply everyday art materials such as paper, glue sticks, felt pens and paintbrushes. Facilitators will also receive support through regular online check-ins during the programme.
We believe this programme offers a valuable opportunity to strengthen wellbeing and resilience.
